Winners Women's Social Leadership Awards 2011

A BETTER WORLD. POWERED BY WOMEN

And the Winner Is....

The Women’s Social Leadership Awards were set up in 2007 to recognise the achievements of women using innovative and bold solutions to solve social and environmental issues.
Now in their fifth year these prestigious International Awards run by Ogunte, the social business that supports women social entrepreneurs, have been presented to campaigners and social entrepreneurs in the UK and abroad. This year’s winners were announced during an event supported by Ernst and Young on June 14th 2011.
The winners will each receive business coaching and mentoring support from experts to help them further develop their work, as well as a continuous access to relevant stakeholders and resources to pursue their ventures.

This year's winners are:

Social Business Leader of the Year

Catherine Conway | UK | Unpackaged

Catherine Conway set up Unpackaged on 2006 because she wanted to refill her daily groceries using her own containers and remove unnecessary waste in the process.

Catherine simply brings about common sense and sustainable behaviour in her retail Unpackaged. She proves that everybody can do their bit towards the huge waste and packaging issue. Research shows that the act of reusing and refilling products made locally keeps money in local economies. Each household can save up to £470 per annum by not spending on packaging, and around £480 per year, by buying only the food they need rather than wasting it. We need more of Unpackaged shops in each community.

Leader in Charities, Networks and Campaigns for Social Change

Rioch Edwards-Brown | UK | The 5 Percenters

Her campaign, the 5 Percenters, stands for the 1 in 20 cases routinely misdiagnosed as Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS).
Over 14 years, without pay or funding, Rioch has collected an incredible amount of testimonies, case-studies, expert medical evidence, and she has helped 4000 families in the UK and worldwide with her knowledge. 150 lawyers have used her data, and she has discovered 9 other conditions that mimic symptoms presented in cases of child abuse.

Rioch proves that with sheer determination, tenacity and intelligent media campaigning, you can influence policy and turn lives around.

Leader in the Workplace (intermediaries).

Allie Hoffman | Cambodia | The Pari Project

Allie Hoffman believes in better. She set up the Pari Project at 24 in Cambodia because she realised there was a huge discord between what donors and funders were funding and what grassroots humanitarian organisations were ready to deliver. Based in Cambodia and now expanding in Africa, the Pari Project enables over 30 NGOs to improve their systems through a set of quality standards and grow their social impact, and also encourage donors to be social investors, not just cash cows.

Like many social ventures intermediaries, her work is crucial to help organisations on the ground deliver tangible and sustainable results. Too often, intermediaries and leaders in the workplace are hidden fairies. They are change catalysts who don’t always get the recognition they are due
