I’m a London based development consultant, working to redefine leadership for the 21st century. I work with all kinds of people in organisations to help them lead more sustainably and authentically as well as generally running their companies in a way that might lead to a better world. My passion though is about the world being a better place for women.
To date I’ve set up a women's network in Kingston, made a documentary film on the future for women (www.visionarydialogues.com) and co-founded an organisation to increase the numbers of female MP’s (www.thedowningstreetproject.com). I am a bit of a serial social innovator and am now focusing on leadership in politics, through my new blog www.leechalmers.com.
Change?
Specifically I am working to change what people see as leadership; from a very masculine activity to something that women do well, just in a different way.
I am attempting to change what people in the UK recognise as leadership. Currently only 19.5% of our MP’s are female and a paltry percentage of our senior leaders in business are female. This is partly down to practical factors, like women leaving to have children, but is also partly because people still link the term ‘leader’ to men. We need to change that so that women can bring their qualities to leadership and be recognised for it. I tweet and blog about this issue, as well as speaking at events, including in the House of Commons. In the near future I hope to be running small groups to support women leaders. Watch this space.
Networks?
Twitter has been brilliant, even leading to a meeting at 10 Downing Street. Ning has become a very useful online network tool. In terms of face to face networks, attending political events has been very useful, especially those set up by Women and the Vote when it was running in 2009. There is a space there for non-partisan women interested in politics...
